From the composer: ‘Echo and Exclamation’ begins with a lush woodwind chorale, which is then echoed (with variation) by the brass section. After a short bridge, the theme is recapped by the whole ensemble. The ‘Exclamation’ section is a rousing march in Eb based on the earlier theme. The upper woodwinds/ brass and the low woodwinds/brass alternate melodic statements until they join forces for a triumphant finale. This piece is designed to develop stylistic versatility, dynamic contrast, and aural awareness in young intermediate concert bands.
