Composed by Hector Berlioz. Arranged by John Gibson. Romantic Period. 100 pages. JB Linear #2530245. Published by JB Linear (A0.581847).

Set for clarinet choir by John Gibson (Eb Soprano, Bb clarinet 1-3, alto clarinet - alternate 4th Bb, bass clarinet, and BBb or EEb contra)

The Rob Roy Overture for orchestra was composed in 1831 by Hector Berlioz with Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy as inspiration. Scott's book took a rather romantic view of Rob Roy MacGregor as a Scottish Robin Hood character.  Rob Roy was born in 1671 and became a folk hero and the focus of a number of movies.  Berlioz used rollicking Scottish jig figures and many parts of the piece were later re-worked into his Harold in Italy for viola and orchestra.

Berlioz's overture set for clarinet choir requires sufficient forces of players to carry off his intentions, so I suggest this be played by a large clarinet choir, preferably with at least 3 on a part for the Bb clarinet, 2 on alto (or alternate 4th Bb), and 2 on bass, A single Eb soprano and contra clarinet would be adequate.  Of course, a smaller group could perform this, but a larger one might be more successful.  The piece is about 9 minutes long.
